Good to see this type of thing happening in rugby league.

THEY possess physiques that can dent brutal defensive lines and rattle opponents with crunching tackles, but the NRL has also acknowledged the need to empower its growing number of Pacific Islander players with a voice.
This week 35 senior players and a handful of team officials, all of Pacific Islander heritage, will participate in a three-day NRL leadership camp. They'll learn how to help young players of similar backgrounds cope with aspects of the code that conflict with their culture - such as questioning club leaders.
It's expected the attendees, dual international Lote Tuqiri included, will appreciate the need to occasionally act as the liaison between the young, shy players and their club's coach or chief executive.

Unfortunately, the quietness of many of these men leads to them being called stupid by bigots.

The Fui Fui story is spot on.

I don't think the NRL and the clubs utilise their players enough during the pre-season.

It could be a week of the players time during pre-season where they could still train, but it would do so much to develop the sport, if all players were involved, you could have around 300 players spread around Rural Aus and the pacific islands, running clinics and fan days.

I agree Chris, however I still think it is in their best interests as the NRL generally get the best pacific island players in the league anyway. So it will be beneficial to both the international game as well as themselves.

And it's good that someone here is trying to discuss Rugby League matters for a change instead of talking nonsense. If the NRL Clubs want to get the best Island players, time for the NRL clubs to showcase them on the World Stage!
Capetown would be the best bet at this stage of procedings because the Cape Coloureds idolise them(Islanders) and Rugby League is making its'presence felt there in a big way.
Strike while the iron is hot and time to take a WCC there as well as some pre-season games. They will make 10 to 1 just on the exchange alone!!

Great idea mate.

I think the NRL is starting to get the idea because of how well spread out the pre-season games are in Australia. They are intelligently taking teams to locations that will suit and it will develop the NRL very quickly. While the have pre-season games in there areas, they are having these coaching clinics and players mixing it up with everyone.

Taking the concept overseas would be a great step.

I wonder if the Islander camp was around in 2008, would Sonny-Bill have still left the way he did? Sonny-Bill spoke about Canterbury forcing him to say in a news conference that he was an alcoholic after 1 night of drinking too much and where pictures of him like that were splashed everwhere.

The main point of that interview in France is how the clubs treat their players. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

This camp will hopefully allow the Islander community in both RL and outside to hopefully make a difference in cultural awareness for our PI community in Australia!
